Hypnotherapy: How It Works

Hypnotherapy employs the use of hypnosis in giving treatment to a person suffering from some certain ailments or from maladies that are usually related to one's mind. It has been proven through the years that hypnotherapy has been the reason for the successful cure of many illnesses like phobias and stress, to mention a few. The other diseases that can be treated by hypnotherapy are obesity, smoking, amnesia, insomnia, etc. Besides these, hypnotherapy has also been found to be able to treat certain functional diseases like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind. A person under hypnosis gets into a very relaxed and comfortable frame of mind. One main criterion for a person to be able to get hypnotized is that it has to be done willingly. No person can get hypnotized without his consent. Once the hypnosis gets underway, the patient is no longer in the conscious state of mind. He is, at this point, neither asleep nor fully awake. The patient cannot question, pass critical judgment or analyze situations. He is not "thinking" in the traditional sense of the term but rather, he is "experiencing", like when one is watching a movie. The hypnotherapist can then make suggestions that are very likely to be more acceptable to the mind and are more likely to 'stick' and be acted upon. However, if for some reason the patient wills himself not to allow the suggestions to be accepted, they will not be. The smoker, who comes in to quit smoking but is not really committee to that goal, cannot be forced to do so. If at any point if the therapy the patient feels uncomfortable and wishes to end the session, he can do so.

The use of therapy as a form of medical tool for treatment has long since been in practice from times immemorial. Its roots go back to as far as the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Indians. It has taken centuries for the present system of hypnotherapy to come into its modern form of existence- the one we know of and practice today. There are various methods of practicing hypnotherapy. Different techniques are employed to treat different ailments. To mention a few, there is the technique of Age Regression, the Revivification method, the Guided Imagery method, the Direct and Indirect suggestion method and the Post Hypnotic suggestion Method. All these methods help in the treatment of the patient willing to get hypnotherapy for treating specific problems. Though there are many that do not believe in the effectiveness of the therapy, there can be no denial, however, that hypnotherapy has been the reason for the success of the treatment of many ailments that other forms of therapy failed to do so.
